Aylen Junior High, Puyallup Open Doors, and Zeiger Elementary have been recognized by the Washington State Board of Education and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for exceptional student growth and progress during the 2024-25 school year. The May 4, 2026, announcement places the three schools among 379 public schools statewide honored through the Washington School Recognition Program.

Celebrating Growth Across Multiple Measures

Each year, the program highlights schools that demonstrate exceptional progress in key areas of student success. This year, 16% of schools in Washington received this distinction. All three Puyallup schools were recognized in the “Growth” category, which honors schools where at least one student group made some of the largest gains statewide in areas such as English language arts, math, attendance, graduation rates, and more.

“I want to thank every student, every family, and every educator that has leaned into the work of advancing student achievement,” said State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. “Across the state, our schools are providing an innovative, high-quality learning environment, and our students are showing up ready to engage.”

Aylen Junior High

Aylen was recognized for student growth among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students, who ranked in the top 10% for their ELA proficiency and ELA student growth percentiles.

Aylen Principal Thomas Ostrander says the award speaks to what the Aylen Falcons are all about. “We have built a culture where growth, effort, and high expectations are not optional. Our team shows up every day for kids and pushes them to be their best, and I am incredibly proud of our students and staff for this achievement. It is what makes the Falcon Family special.”

Puyallup Open Doors

Puyallup Open Doors placed in the Top 10% for extended graduation rates and attendance among students with disabilities.

“This recognition reflects the growth and determination of our students, and the commitment of our staff to meet each learner where they are,” said principal Michael Sanchez. “At Puyallup Open Doors, we are focused on creating meaningful pathways for every student, and we’re proud to see that work making a difference.”

Zeiger Elementary

Zeiger earned recognition for top 10% growth among Asian students in math proficiency, ELA growth, and attendance.

Principal Anthony Corrado shared how grateful the school is to earn this recognition. “Receiving this award is a true testament to the efforts every staff member makes to create a welcoming environment where all students feel valued, seen and heard.”

About the Washington School Recognition Program

Established by the state legislature in 2010 and redesigned in 2018 to provide more equitable recognition across K-12 education in the state, the Washington School Recognition Program is operated by the State Board of Education in collaboration with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee. Recognition is based on Washington School Improvement Framework (WSIF) data, with this year’s awards reflecting 2025 data.

“We are proud of everyone who was recognized this year,” said Mary Fertakis, Chair of the Washington State Board of Education. “This recognition reflects the hard work, dedication, and commitment happening every day in these schools — from students showing up ready to learn, to educators and administrators providing meaningful support and instruction.”
