SUN Bucks (Summer EBT): What Families Need to Know

SUN Bucks (Summer EBT) is a program that helps eligible families purchase groceries for their children during the summer months when school meals are not available.

What to expect:

  • SUN Bucks EBT cards will be mailed to eligible families beginning in June.
  • Benefits can be used to purchase food items at participating retailers.

Who is eligible:

Eligibility for SUN Bucks is based on household income or participation in certain public assistance programs, such as:

  • Free or reduced-price school meals
  • SNAP (Basic Food/EBT)
  • TANF

In the Puyallup School District, many students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals are automatically enrolled in SUN Bucks—but not all students will be.

You may need to take action if:

  • Your student attends a school offering universal free meals (CEP) and you have not completed a household application
  • Your family’s financial situation has recently changed
  • Your contact or mailing information may be outdated
  • You believe your child is eligible but have not yet applied

What families should do now:

  • Use the state’s online screening tool to check eligibility and apply if needed
  • Make sure your mailing address is up to date with your child’s school to ensure card delivery

Taking a few minutes now to confirm your information can help ensure your family receives benefits without delay.

Additional Support for Families: Harvest Bucks

Some families may also qualify for Harvest Bucks, a separate program that provides additional funds for fruits and vegetables when using an EBT card at participating grocery stores and farmers markets. Eligibility requirements are more limited and may require both SNAP (Basic Food/EBT) and Coordinated Care coverage. No separate application is required.
