Stephen Pickard Named 2025 Regional Teacher of the Year by PSESD

A man, wearing a red and blue striped tie, smiles at the camera in front of a brick wall.

We are proud to announce that Stephen Pickard, Band Director and Music Teacher at Rogers High School and Dessie Evans Elementary, has been named the 2025 Regional Teacher of the Year for Puget Sound Educational Service District 121 (PSESD). This prestigious award follows his recognition in March as the Secondary Educator of the Year through the Puyallup School District's Celebrating Excellence Awards program - an acknowledgment by the PSD community of Pickard's outstanding impact on students and schools.

Recognized for his exceptional leadership, inclusive teaching practices, and deep dedication to students, Stephen brings over a decade of experience to his role as Director of Bands for the Puyallup School District. His core belief - that music is a vehicle for connection, empowerment, and critical thinking - shines through in everything he does.

"By giving students real choices, elevating diverse voices, and connecting our classroom to the broader community, I help them become not just better musicians, but more engaged, empathetic people," Pickard shares. "This is what defines me as a teacher - and why I believe music education matters."

Stephen fosters a classroom culture where every student feels seen, valued, and inspired. He leads ensembles that build both musicianship and community, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and connect music to the world around them. In addition to his work in the classroom, he is an active clinician, mentor, and advocate for equity in the arts across Washington state.

Please join us in congratulating Stephen Pickard on this well-deserved honor!
