2025-26 Spanish-Dual Language Program Registration Now Open!
The Puyallup School District (PSD) is one of a few districts in Washington state that offer a Spanish-Dual Language Program, bringing together Spanish and English speakers in one classroom.
Location and Enrollment
PSD is now accepting applications for the 2025-26 dual language program.
- Karshner and Dessie Evans Elementary - Grades K through 6
- Aylen Junior High - Grade 7
Kindergarten enrollment will be open to both English and Spanish-speaking families.
Grades 1 through 7 enrollment will be open to Spanish-speaking families depending on classroom space and the student's Spanish-language proficiency level based on a required interview and evaluation.
What are the Program's Benefits and Objectives?
Instruction is carefully designed and intentionally conducted in both English and Spanish. As a result, students can become literate and fluent in both languages.
Improved Academic Performance
Once students reach the intermediate grades (7-12), dual language students perform as well as or better than non-dual language students on standardized tests of English and Math, administered in English.
Enhanced Cognitive Skills
Dual Language students typically develop greater cognitive flexibility, demonstrating increased attention control, better memory, and superior problem-solving skills as well as enhanced understanding of their primary language.
Increased Cultural Sensitivity
Dual Language students are more aware of and show more positive attitudes towards other cultures and an appreciation of other people.
College and Career Ready
Dual Language students are better prepared for the global community and job markets where a second language is an asset.
What If My Student Is a Current Spanish-Dual Language Student?
Current Dual Language families do not need to reapply.
What Happens If My Child Is Accepted into the Program?
Once accepted, students commit to continuing in the program through grade 12. If students do not reside in Dessie Evans or Karshner Elementary attendance boundaries, transportation will be provided through hub locations, and designated bus stop locations for students within a neighborhood.
