Apply for 2024-25 Spanish Dual Language Program
The Puyallup School District is one of a few districts in Washington state to offer an elementary dual language program, bringing together Spanish and English speakers in one classroom.
Applications are being accepted for entry into the program at the following locations:
- Students entering kindergarten and grades 3-6*: Karshner Elementary
*Students must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish at or above their grade level to be considered.
What are the Program's Benefits and Objectives?
Improved Academic Performance
Once students reach the intermediate grades (7-12), dual language students perform as well as or better than non-dual language students on standardized tests of English and Math, administered in English.
Enhanced Cognitive Skills
Dual Language students typically develop greater cognitive flexibility, demonstrating increased attention control, better memory, and superior problem solving skills as well as enhanced understanding of their primary language.
Increased Cultural Sensitivity
Dual Language students are more aware of and show more positive attitudes towards other cultures and an appreciation of other people.
College and Career Ready
Dual Language students are better prepared for the global community and job markets where a second language is an asset.
More Information
Instruction is carefully designed and intentionally conducted in both English and Spanish. As a result, students have the opportunity to become literate and fluent in both languages.
What If My Student Is A Current Dual Language Student?
Current Dual Language families do not need to reapply.
This application period is an opportunity for existing or new PSD students to gain entry into the program. Space is limited.
What Happens If My Child Is Accepted Into the Program?
Once accepted, students commit to continuing in the program through grade 12. If students do not reside in Dessie Evans or Karshner Elementary attendance boundaries, transportation will be provided through hub locations, and designated bus stop locations for students within a neighborhood.
