Board Selects Superintendent Search Firm, Highlighting Expertise and Alignment with District Values

In a unanimous decision at the September 15th school board meeting, the School Board approved superintendent search firm Northwest Leadership Associates (NWLA) to lead the process of finding a superintendent to begin in the 2026-27 school year. After thoroughly evaluating proposals from five search firms, including Hazard Young Attea Associates, Human Capital Enterprises, McPherson and Jacobson, and Ray and Associates, the Board chose NWLA based on their proposal that demonstrated a deep understanding of the district’s unique needs, a competitive cost structure, and their established reputation as a leading Pacific Northwest search firm.

Since its establishment in 2000, NWLA has successfully conducted over 390 superintendent searches for educational organizations in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. The Puyallup search team, composed of experienced professionals with a combined 45 years of superintendent experience in Washington State, is dedicated to ensuring a comprehensive, inclusive, and transparent process.

NWLA has developed a four-phase search methodology to guide the process effectively:

  1. Preparing for the Search
  2. Recruiting and Screening Candidates
  3. Interviewing
  4. Making the Final Selection and Closing.

The firm emphasizes a community-sensitive approach, balancing meaningful involvement of key stakeholders with the final decision-making authority of the Board.

Engagement strategies include one-on-one interviews, community forums, focus groups, online surveying, and advisory groups to gather diverse perspectives and input. NWLA is committed to developing a candidate pool that reflects the client organization's diversity and regional context, actively promoting equity and inclusion in all aspects of its work. In the event that the placed superintendent leaves the position within two years, NWLA offers a service guarantee, agreeing to conduct a new full search at no additional cost for their professional services. NWLA's all-inclusive search services are $30,500.

"In this crucial time, we believe NWLA will help us find a superintendent who is not only committed to student success, equity, and community engagement, but also possesses the skills and expertise to navigate the budget challenges ahead," said School Board President Maddie Names. "Their experience in leadership recruitment will be instrumental in guiding our search for a visionary leader who can build on our district's accomplishments and aligns with our strategic priorities.”

Throughout the selection process, the Board emphasized the importance of transparency, stakeholder input, and finding a candidate with the expertise and leadership qualities to continue advancing our district's mission. The Board looks forward to collaborating with NWLA in this critical endeavor.
