New Propane Buses Arrive to Support Cleaner, Quieter Student Transportation

Transportation staff member inspects the engine area of a new propane-powered school bus at a district facility, highlighting cleaner, quieter student transportation improvements.
The Puyallup School District (PSD) Transportation Department has begun taking delivery of new propane-powered school buses as part of an ongoing effort to modernize the district’s fleet. In February 2025, the district finalized its decision to purchase propane buses, and the first order of 10 buses has now arrived.

In total, the district has ordered 23 propane buses, with additional deliveries expected. These buses will replace older buses that have reached the end of their service life under the state’s depreciation schedule, helping ensure the district continues to provide reliable transportation for students.

Why Propane Buses

Propane buses offer several advantages that make them a strong fit for the district’s transportation needs. They are more cost-effective than electric buses, with lower purchase prices and reduced maintenance costs, and they perform consistently regardless of weather conditions or route length. This reliability is especially important for ensuring students arrive at school and home safely each day.

Propane buses are also approximately 50 percent quieter than traditional diesel buses, creating a calmer ride for students and a more comfortable working environment for drivers.

While the district continues to monitor advances in electric bus technology, it currently does not have the infrastructure needed to support electric buses at scale. Electric buses also require specialized training and third-party support for maintenance and repairs, which can increase costs and downtime. Propane buses allow the district to maintain and service vehicles in-house while still moving toward cleaner transportation options.

Funding and Fleet Planning

The new propane buses are funded through the district’s transportation vehicle fund, using state-provided depreciation funding that supports the replacement of aging buses across Washington. Buses are replaced once they reach the end of their depreciation cycle, typically after 13 years for large buses and eight years for smaller vehicles.

This latest purchase also reflects long-term fleet planning. Following a fire in 2016 that resulted in the loss of multiple buses, several vehicles purchased that year are now reaching the end of their service life. The new propane buses will help ensure the district maintains adequate capacity across its fleet, which currently includes 166 buses.

Diesel buses will continue to play a role in the district’s transportation system, particularly on routes that require higher passenger capacity. Propane buses will primarily replace a mix of older diesel and gasoline buses and are anticipated to begin serving routes in early 2026, with initial deployment focused on schools near the district’s fueling facilities.

Supporting Students, Staff, and the Community

Overall, propane buses produce fewer emissions than diesel buses and use cleaner-burning fuel, supporting improved air quality around schools, neighborhoods, and bus stops. Combined with quieter operation and lower fuel costs, these buses represent a practical step forward for the district.

Director of Transportation Quavion Swazer says the transition reflects a balanced approach to student transportation.

“By transitioning to propane-powered buses, we are investing in a more sustainable future while continuing to provide safe and reliable transportation for our students,” Swazer said. “This approach reduces our environmental impact, manages costs responsibly, and benefits both taxpayers and the broader community.”

As new propane buses are placed into service, the district will continue focusing on safe, reliable transportation solutions that meet the needs of families across Puyallup schools.
