Our Commitment to Supporting All Students and Families

A smiling teacher stands in a classroom with a diverse group of elementary students gathered around him, all facing the camera. Colorful posters and learning materials are visible in the background.

In recent weeks, we have heard questions and concerns about immigration-related activity and what it could mean for students and families. We want to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every student feels safe, welcomed, and supported in our schools, regardless of background or immigration status, and to share additional information and resources.

Schools Are Safe Places for Every Child

Federal and state law guarantee all children the right to a public education without fear of discrimination or intimidation. This includes protections affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ensures that undocumented children and youth have the same right to attend public schools as U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

To uphold this commitment, Puyallup School District follows clear policies and guidance from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and Puyallup School District School Board Policy 3226R that prioritize student safety, privacy, and access to education.

How Schools Protect Students

  • No Immigration or Citizenship Questions: We do not ask students or families to disclose immigration or citizenship status as a condition of enrollment, participation, or access to services.

  • Protection of Privacy: Student and family information is confidential and protected under federal and state law, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Information is not shared with immigration authorities unless legally required by a valid judicial order, which is carefully reviewed by district leadership and legal counsel.

  • Limiting Access to Campuses: Schools are safe spaces. Any request by immigration authorities to enter a school must meet strict legal requirements, and district administrators follow established procedures to protect students and families.

What Happens If Immigration Officers Come to a School?

Situations like this are rare, but staff are trained and prepared to respond calmly and consistently. If an immigration officer requests access to a school, our staff will:

  • Refer the individual to the school principal or a designated administrator.
  • Request appropriate legal documentation before any communication or access is considered.
  • Notify district leadership, who will consult with legal counsel to ensure all actions comply with the law and protect student rights.
  • Make every effort to notify affected families promptly and provide ongoing support, if applicable.

We Are Here for You

We understand that immigration-related news can be unsettling. Please know that our schools are focused on learning, belonging, and student well-being. If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to reach out to your school principal or the district office. We are here to listen and support families.
