Edgemont Junior High Student Plans for Her Future
Edgemont Junior High 8th grade student Violet Ferrier was recently featured on the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) website for applying to become a Deferred Compensation Program (DCP) member.
Violet's application initially left the DCP office staff confused, believing there was an error. After an initial rejection of her application, Violet confirmed that she was indeed the applicant, is 14 years old, and had an interest in investing in her future. This led to DCP evaluating their practices and making changes that allow individuals as young as 14 years old to become DCP members.
In a featured article by the DRS, Violet, who teaches swimming in our district, talks about the "Dad Match" she gets from her father for contributing to her retirement, as well as her belief in the importance of planning for her future. She also shares her dad's financial philosophy of "save some, give some, and spend some."
