District Receives Department of Defense Award for Staff Support

We are proud to share that Puyallup School District has received the Above and Beyond Award from the Department of Defense’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). This award recognizes organizations that provide outstanding support to employees who serve in the National Guard or Reserve.

PSD teacher Crystal Lothrop, a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, nominated the district for its ongoing support of her military service. Over the years, the HR team has worked closely with Crystal to coordinate military leave and benefits. During a recent audit, HR staff identified and proactively corrected a few remaining days of paid military leave still owed to Crystal. She expressed appreciation for the team’s transparency, unaware that anything had been missing.

In recognition of the district’s ongoing partnership and support, Crystal nominated the Puyallup School District for the 2025 Above and Beyond Award.

Out of more than 140 nominations, only five employers statewide received the honor. HR Director Tina Limmer and HR Analyst Krista McBride accepted the award at a recent banquet, where Crystal made a surprise appearance - flying in from Florida for the ceremony.
