District Earns Recognition for Sustainability and Decarbonization Efforts

Puyallup School District has been recognized as a McKinstry Zero+ Champion of Sustainability for its continued commitment to energy efficiency and responsible facility management.

On Sunday, November 9, 2025, the district was recognized prior to the Seattle Seahawks game against the Arizona Cardinals at Lumen Field. Executive Director of Construction, Maintenance, and Facilities Planning, Brady Martin, was on hand to receive the award on behalf of the district.

The district’s long-term focus on improving building operations, including targeted HVAC upgrades, LED lighting, retro-commissioning, and conservation practices, has reduced energy use by more than 2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) and 70,000 therms, lowering annual utility costs by over $163,000.

Additional planned projects are expected to reduce energy use by another 600,000 kWh each year.

"Puyallup School District is deeply committed to doing what’s best for their students and community, and that shared vision is what makes the work so rewarding,” said Melissa Pendleton, Senior Account Executive at McKinstry.

The district has also secured state and utility funding to support ongoing improvements, including grants for energy audits and upcoming rooftop solar installations. This recognition reflects PSD’s continued efforts to create efficient, healthy learning environments for students and staff.
