Can You Dig the Progress? Fruitland’s Traffic Improvements Take Shape

There’s noticeable progress at Fruitland Elementary as construction crews continue advancing the sitework for long-awaited traffic improvements. Excavation is now underway for new underground systems designed to manage stormwater and keep the new parking and bus loop areas dry and functional year-round. 

What a difference a week makes. In just a few days, the site has transformed, graded surfaces are nearly complete, and groundwork is being laid for safer, more efficient traffic patterns. These improvements are part of the 2024 Capital Levy and will help reduce congestion along Fruitland Avenue, easing daily drop-offs and pick-ups for families while improving safety for students and the surrounding neighborhood. 

Crews have also completed tree removal in carefully selected areas to improve visibility in preparation of the new layout. We know trees are part of what gives Fruitland its charm, and while some trees have needed to be removed for safety purposes, the final phase of the project includes a full landscaping plan to restore greenery and preserve the school’s welcoming atmosphere.

"Every decision, from design to demolition, has been guided by safety studies and engineering best practices to ensure we’re doing what’s best for students and responsibly managing taxpayer dollars."

Temporary Transportation Changes This Fall   

To support safety during construction, families will notice changes to student transportation beginning this fall. Specifically, all students who do not use a neighborhood bus stop will need to board and depart buses at the Kessler Center. This new satellite location provides a safer and more organized solution as work at the Fruitland site progresses.   

Families who currently drive their students to school will have two transportation options during construction:   

1. Use existing neighborhood bus stop locations   
2. Use the Kessler Center for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up   

This will help to keep work crews and students safe during construction.    

Plan Ahead and Stay Informed   

These improvements at Fruitland are a key first step toward resolving long-term traffic and safety issues for the neighborhood. The project will take several months to complete, and there may be further temporary adjustments to transportation routines. We encourage all families to stay connected to school and district news throughout the summer and into the 2025-2026 school year.
