Elementary Human Growth and Development Lessons
4th Grade
FLASH and Human Growth and Development – 4th Grade Parent Overview – Updated for 2024-25
Puyallup School District Approved Curriculum
These are the only materials approved by the Puyallup School District to be used for 4th grade. No other materials should be used without the permission of the Puyallup School Board.

Previewing Materials
Puyallup families are invited to preview FLASH and Human Growth and Development curriculum materials each fall, which are available through Schoology to provide parent access from home. Lessons and videos have been uploaded to Schoology for preview during the 2024-25 school year.
Opting Out of Lessons
After viewing materials (preview night, online, etc.), families can choose to sign an opt-out form for their child. The opt-out form gets returned to the school, which will forward a copy to the classroom teacher and the Director of Instructional Learning at Sparks Stadium.
Any students who are opted-out should discretely be sent to another classroom, the office, or possibly help with younger students in a different classroom. No grading penalty will occur for those excluded.
Parents who use the opt-out form are choosing to remove their child from ALL of the FLASH lessons, unless specified to the teacher.
Booklets and Human Growth Lesson
Most schools teach the lesson in the spring. The lesson is approximately 60 minutes in length, which includes setting appropriate discussion boundaries, reviewing the student booklet, written questions by students, teacher answering the questions, and a short video.
In fourth grade, boys and girls are separated during this lesson. Students see the video of their gender. Human Growth and Development Booklets should be sent home to parents approximately 2 weeks prior to beginning the lesson.

In fifth grade, boys and girls are do not need to be separated during the HGD lessons, though some schools may choose to do so. During the HGD question and answer period students are typically separated. Students see both the male and female videos. Human Growth and Development Booklets should be sent home to parents approximately 2 weeks prior to beginning the lesson.
Suggested Pacing for Teaching the Flash Curriculum
For all lessons, follow the teacher guidelines in the red, FLASH binder. Each day of lessons below is approximately 60 minutes in length. There is a total of 7 lessons, however you may choose to combine some lessons as shown below:
- Day #1—Introduction Lesson
- Day #2 – HGD Booklet and Questions
- Day #3 – HIV/AIDS
- Days #4/5—Sexual Exploitation Lessons 1 and 2
- Day #6 - Friendship
Establishing Classroom Norms
Is it okay for students to feel uncomfortable during these lessons.
Some suggested norms to establish prior to the lesson to help students feel more comfortable include:
- Respect feelings of other people.
- Protect people’s privacy (i.e. questions about friends or family members should not contain names or identities. Use “Someone I know….”
- Questions are in written format. This helps ensure student questions are appropriate for 5th graders. Questions not related to the fifth-grade content should NOT be answered during the lesson. Refer students to their families for these questions. Example response—“If your question was not read aloud, this is a question that is not covered with the information in today’s lesson. Please discuss the question with your families.”

Preview Materials for Sexual Health, HIV/AIDS Curriculum
Curriculum Review for Grades 4 through 9
Families of elementary and junior high students in grades 4 through 9 are invited to preview Human Growth and Development & HIV-AIDS curriculum in Schoology. This preview opportunity replaces the yearly in-person preview night held each fall.
Curriculum preview for all grade levels can be accessed through Schoology by joining the “Human Growth and Development Preview” group:
1. Login to Schoology – parent login at app.schoology.com
• Enter email/username and password.
• Select Puyallup School District, not your child’s school.
2. Click GROUPS in the menu bar at the top.
3. In the upper right corner under your profile name click ‘My Groups.’
4. Click the blue ‘Join Group’ button on the right side.
5. Enter the group access code: NGR6-XBJ7-2DRNB
On the initial page click the video link under START HERE. This 7-minute video introduces the Human Growth and Development curriculum in the Puyallup SD. After viewing the introductory video, parents can click on Resources tab in the left menu, then choose the grade level to preview curriculum and videos adopted by the Puyallup SD.
