Health and Fitness
Overview
Health and Physical Education teaches our students that good health and safety principles can lead to a lifetime of healthy practices -- resulting in more productive, active, and successful lives.
According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association people maintaining high levels of physical fitness and sound health practices are at lower risk of health related illnesses and impairments.
Learning Standards
The Health and Physical Education Standards and grade-level outcomes describe what students should know and be able to do. They establish the concepts and skills necessary for safe and healthy living, and in turn, for successful learning.
Assessments
The Office of the Superintendent for Public Instruction and Puyallup School District have developed assessments for Health & Fitness which are designed to help teachers determine whether students have met the health and physical education learning standards.
Beliefs
The Puyallup School District believes that an understanding of good health and fitness concepts and practices is essential for all students. Businesses have already begun to realize the extent to which poor health practices can undermine an employee's effectiveness and ability to succeed.
The same is true of students. Teaching our students good health and safety principles can lead to a lifetime of healthy practices, resulting in more productive, active, and successful lives.
Courses in fitness and active lifestyles are offered in the Puyallup School District from elementary through high school. Comprehensive classroom health instruction includes units on mental health, HIV/AIDS, First Aid, CPR, environmental safety issues, healthy choices, nutrition, and so on.
Academic Requirements for Graduation – Health and Fitness
To graduate with a high school diploma, students must complete two credits in health and fitness.
This requirement consists of:
- 1.5 credits in fitness, fulfilled through Physical Education (PE) coursework.
- 0.5 credit in health, satisfied by completing a health course.
The Puyallup School District values the development of lifelong healthy habits, including physical fitness and emotional well-being. To support this, a variety of PE and health classes are available. Students can refer to the course catalog for a full list of options.
