High School & Beyond Plan
Overview
The High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) is a state graduation requirement designed to guide students through high school and prepare them for postsecondary education, training, and careers. Initiated in seventh grade with a career interest and skills inventory, the HSBP is revised throughout high school to reflect changing interests and goals.
The HSBP helps students explore skills and interests, connect career pathways with courses, and identify steps needed to achieve postsecondary goals. It tracks graduation requirements and entry into postsecondary programs and careers, encouraging students to take ownership of their high school experience by choosing relevant coursework and activities.
The Washington Legislature requires all HSBPs to include:
- Career goals based on a skills and interest assessment.
- Educational goals.
- A four-year high school course plan meeting graduation requirements and aligning with career and educational goals.
- Options for fulfilling graduation requirements, including academic acceleration, dual credit, Career and Technical Education (CTE), and graduation pathways.
- Information on federal and state financial aid, including the College Bound Scholarship.
- Documentation for state and federal financial aid applications, with deadlines and submission importance.
- Specific information for students involved in dependency proceedings, at risk of homelessness, or requiring financial and tax information from family members.
- Advising days and seminars for financial aid applications.
- By twelfth grade, a resume or activity log documenting education, work experience, and community service.
Additionally, the HSBP must be revised as necessary, updated for junior year course-taking, identify interventions and support for students not meeting assessment standards, advise on math courses for students below standard in middle school, record CTE course equivalencies, and for students with an IEP, align with their transition plan.
The Puyallup School District requires all students to complete:
- 20-hour community-based learning or service experience
- Senior interview where they respond to four questions:
1. What high school skills and community experiences helped prepare you to be future ready?
2. What is your immediate post-high plan? (college/work/military/other)
3. How does this align with your long-term career goals?
4. To put your plan in motion, what might be your next steps?
