After-School Tutoring (Grades 7-12)

Overview 

Funded through a Refugee School Impact Program (RSI) subgrant, the After-School Tutoring Program provides free after-school and weekend academic support.

Who It Serves

While the program serves all Puyallup School District Students in grades 7-12, it prioritizes support for multilingual learners and new U.S. residents, helping them strengthen language and study skills. 

No pre-registration is required. Students are welcome to attend any session that fits their schedule.

What It Offers for Students

The tutoring sessions provide all students with a supportive environment to improve academically, complete assignments, and build confidence in their learning.

Hybrid Tutoring Format and Schedule

The After-School Tutoring Program combines in-person and online learning.

  • Start date: Saturday, November 1, 2025 
  • End date: Saturday, June 6, 2026
  • Tutoring will not take place on early release and non-school days (e.g., winter break, spring break, federal holidays, staff workdays) 

Upchieve: Online Tutoring Platform 

Upchieve is a free online tutoring platform that connects students with live volunteer tutors for on-demand help in subjects like math, English, science, and college prep. The service can be accessed anytime on a laptop, computer, or phone.

In-Person 

  • Weekdays after school at selected secondary schools and locations. The Activity Bus will be available Monday – Thursday to transport students home after the in-person tutoring sessions. 

  • Monday: 3 - 4 p.m.  - Rogers High School: 12801 86th Ave E, Puyallup, WA 98373
     
  • Tuesday: 2 - 3 p.m. - Edgemont Junior High: 2300 110th Ave E, Edgewood, WA 98372
     
  • Wednesday: 3 - 4 p.m. 
    • Emerald Ridge High School - 12405 184th  St E, Puyallup, WA 98374 
    • Puyallup High - 105 7th St SW, Puyallup, WA 98371
       
  • Thursday: 2 - 3 p.m. 
    • Kalles Junior High - 501 7th Ave SE, Puyallup, WA 98372 
    • Ballou Junior High - 9916 136th St E, Puyallup, WA 98373
       
  • Saturday: 9 - 11 a.m. - Puyallup Public Library (Downtown Puyallup):  324 S. Meridian, Puyallup, WA 98371 (Adult ESL classes also available)
    • Weekend Public Transportation: Pierce Transit Bus Route 402 provides service through Downtown Puyallup on Saturdays, offering families a convenient transportation option. Passengers would exit the bus at the 3rd St SE & 4th Ave SE stop, which is approximately a 5-minute walk from the library. Riders under the age of 18 can take the bus for free by accessing a Free Youth Transit Pass

Onsite directional signage will be available at each school and at the Puyallup Public Library to help students and families find tutoring locations easily.

Role of School Staff and Volunteers 

  • Provide in-person tutoring  
  • Lead small-group or one-on-one support for students who need extra help 
  • Support Saturday sessions at the Puyallup Public Library 
  • Mentor and assist students during study and homework time 
  • Coordinate with Upchieve tutors to ensure consistent academic support
