Energy Management Plan
2025 Plan Update
Puyallup School District is committed to responsible stewardship of its buildings and resources. The Energy Management Plan outlines how the district meets Washington’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard while improving operational efficiency across more than 40 facilities.
Why This Work Matters
- Washington’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard requires large buildings to reduce energy use and improve performance.
- Puyallup School District tracks energy use, identifies efficiency improvements, and invests in better building systems to protect taxpayer funds and support long-term sustainability.
- Efficient buildings reduce operating costs and create healthier learning environments for students and staff.
Districtwide Goals
- Strengthen efficiency across daily operations and capital planning.
- Provide transparent, actionable energy usage data to the public.
- Meet all state energy performance requirements.
- Establish baselines and long-term reduction targets for every facility.
Tracking Energy Performance
ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager gathers real-time data from Puget Sound Energy and Tacoma Public Utilities. All district buildings included in the Clean Buildings Standard are tracked for:
- Weather normalized energy use
- Comparison to state targets
- Annual performance progress
- Five-year compliance requirements
Where We Stand Today
Some schools already outperform state energy targets. Others will require operational improvements or capital replacements to meet compliance deadlines in 2026, 2027, and 2028.
Charts on this page show where each building stands today and how the district is moving toward full compliance.
Improving Performance
The district advances energy efficiency through:
- Strategic equipment replacement prioritizing ENERGY STAR rated systems
- Participation in Puget Sound Energy’s Commercial Strategic Energy Management Program
- Advanced analytics through McKinstry’s Active Energy Management
- Staff training, ongoing commissioning, and HVAC optimization
- Occupant education to reduce avoidable energy waste
Training and Engagement
Operations and Maintenance staff receive continuous training through vendor partners and on-site sessions.
- Teachers and staff have access to resources that support efficient classroom operation.
- The district publishes energy conservation tips and updates for the community.
Capital Planning
Budget planning tools and the mechanical equipment replacement guide direct investments toward efficient, reliable building systems. This ensures taxpayer resources are used responsibly and that the district remains in compliance with state law.
Next Steps
The Energy Manager updates this plan annually and reviews performance trends with district leadership. Continuous improvement keeps the district aligned with state guidelines and positions the community for long term savings.
