PowerED

Learn how PowerED has delivered real savings and what it means for classroom budgets

Key outcomes of Puyallup School District's (PSD) PowerED initiative include significant energy savings, expressed as a percentage, achieved through the implementation of developed uniform project standards aimed at driving ongoing savings. Additionally, the project has resulted in consistently high PSE Commercial Strategic Energy Management (CSEM) rebate incentives, benefiting the district.

Puyallup School District Energy Management Plan

Puyallup School District is committed to responsible stewardship of its buildings and resources. The Energy Management Plan outlines how the district meets Washington’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard while improving operational efficiency across more than 40 facilities.

Energy Efficiency Efforts Help Reduce Utility Costs

The Puyallup School District is continuing to improve energy efficiency across its schools through the district’s Active Energy Management program. During the program’s second year (September 2024–August 2025), the district avoided an estimated $326,700 in energy costs by reducing electricity and natural gas use.

District teams reviewed building systems at multiple schools, identified more than 85 potential efficiency issues, and made adjustments to heating, cooling, and equipment schedules. These efforts helped lower overall electricity use by 4.1% and natural gas use by 9.8% compared with the previous year.

Energy improvements also helped Sunrise Elementary, Florence Pope Elementary, and Kalles Junior High meet state energy performance targets. In addition, efficiency work at Rogers High School earned an $8,000 incentive from Tacoma Public Utilities.

The district will continue reviewing buildings and implementing energy-saving strategies in the coming year to help manage long-term utility costs while maintaining comfortable learning environments for students and staff.
