PSD Recognition Calendar
Enhancing Cultural Awareness and Alignment Across Our Schools
Overview
During the 2024–2025 school year, Puyallup School District conducted a comprehensive review of how schools recognize significant cultural observances and dates. The goal was to increase consistency, support staff, and improve the student experience.
As part of this effort, a 23-member Communications Advisory Committee, made up of teachers, staff, students, parents, and community members, was formed to create recommendations for the district’s first recognition calendar.
Key Recommendations
The recommendations reflect the voices of our students, families, staff, and community members. Together, the committee focused on what matters most, creating meaningful, consistent observances that honor our diverse community.
Required Observances
All schools will continue to observe five Washington State-mandated events:
- Veterans Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Citizenship/Constitution Day
- Temperance & Good Citizenship Day
- Disability History and Awareness Month
These observances ensure compliance with state law while fostering learning and community connection.
Consistent Recognition Methods
-
The Teaching and Learning Department will provide classroom resources and lesson materials for required observances.
-
For additional cultural dates, schools may select recognition methods that best fit their community, such as assemblies, events, displays, or digital communications.
Process
The Advisory Committee used resources from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) and centered discussions on two guiding questions:
-
How do these observances connect to student learning?
-
What impact do they have on staff and student experiences?
Acknowledgements
We thank the Communications Advisory Committee for their dedication and diverse perspectives. Their work is helping create a more inclusive, culturally aware, and aligned learning environment across Puyallup School District.
