Students and staff gathered at Zeiger Elementary last week to celebrate the completion of a new playground and outdoor improvements funded by the 2024 voter-approved Capital Levy.

Fourth-grade students helped mark the occasion during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, holding signs that read “Thank You Voters” as they joined school leaders in celebrating the new play space.

The project replaced an aging playground that had reached the end of its service life and addressed long-standing drainage challenges that often left portions of the play area wet and muddy. The improvements were designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and year-round usability for students.

Since opening, students have quickly embraced the new equipment. Popular features include a four-person seesaw, standing spinners, a spinning wheel, and a large slide. The new playground replaces older equipment, including a metal slide that has served generations of Zeiger students.

In addition to the new play structure, the project included installation of a synthetic turf-style fall protection surface beneath the equipment, helping create a safer and more accessible play environment. A new underground stormwater drainage system was also added to move water away from the playground more efficiently, reducing standing water and helping keep the area usable during the rainy season.

Families may have also noticed another improvement. Last spring, a new paved walking path around the field was completed as part of the project, providing a stable surface for students and staff while improving access throughout the year.

Additional work included seal coating and restriping the adjacent hard play surface to help extend the life of the outdoor facilities.

The Zeiger Elementary playground and site improvements are part of the district’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve existing school facilities through the 2024 Capital Levy. The project reflects the levy’s focus of preserving school infrastructure and creating safe, functional, and accessible learning environments for students.

As students explored the new playground following the ribbon cutting, laughter and excitement filled the play area, highlighting the impact of the improvement for current and future Zeiger students.
