Where We're Growing: Tyee Ranch and the Future of North Hill Schools

Change is coming to North Hill again. The recently approved Tyee Ranch development will add 33 single-family homes within the boundaries of Northwood Elementary, Edgemont Junior High, and Puyallup High School. This new neighborhood brings more than rooftops, it brings families, students, and increased pressure on schools already operating beyond capacity.

A Strategic, Yet Temporary Shift

In 2017–18, the district shifted sixth-grade students from Mt. View and Northwood Elementary to Edgemont Junior High to ease overcrowding. Though most schools returned to a K–6 model in 2019 after new construction funded by the 2015 bond, Mt. View and Northwood stayed K–5 due to ongoing enrollment growth. This resulted in Edgemont’s unique 6–9 grade alignment, an arrangement driven by necessity, not preference.

Demographics Are Changing Too

North Hill’s growth isn’t just about numbers; it’s about diversity. The multilingual learner population has nearly tripled in five years. Northwood now serves 15% multilingual learners, while Edgemont supports students speaking over 30 languages. This shift demands not only more space but also flexible, culturally responsive educational models.

Puyallup High Feels the Impact

The strain extends to Puyallup High School, built in 1927 and last modernized in 1995. Portable classrooms have become a staple but fall short in supporting modern STEM and CTE programs. Crowded hallways, aging facilities, and the need for students to cross public streets for classes create ongoing safety and instructional challenges.

The Need for Long-Term Solutions

Tyee Ranch is one of several developments shaping Region 3’s future. Growth is relentless—and so must be our commitment to strategic, community-driven planning.

Sustainable school solutions require more than projections, they demand partnership. Community engagement is critical to ensuring every student in Puyallup School District has access to safe, modern, and dynamic learning environments.
