Washington State Clean Buildings Act and impacts on Puyallup Schools

Puyallup School District needs significant building upgrades district-wide to comply with a new state law within the next three school years, according to a report presented to the school board at their October 2, 2023 meeting.

The Washington State Clean Building Act was passed in 2019, and expanded in 2022, to enhance energy efficiency and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in buildings of certain sizes and uses, including public schools. Fines can be assessed for buildings that are not in compliance within certain timelines.

In response to this law, PSD is taking steps towards an energy-efficient and sustainable future. This includes focusing on energy-efficient upgrades for our school buildings.

Given financial constraints, however, we must prudently navigate challenging decisions while effectively managing taxpayer resources. Balancing state-mandated requirements with fiscal responsibility remains paramount, reflecting the PSD's commitment to sound decision-making practices.
