Understanding Levy Funding: How Taxpayer Contributions Drive School Projects

Levy

As Puyallup School District embarks on our journey to deliver on promises made possible by our 2024 Capital Levy, it is vital to understand the intricate process of collecting levy funding from taxpayers. Our Levy is not just a sum of money waiting to be spent; it is a commitment from our community to invest in the future of our schools and, most importantly, our children.

It is important to dispel any misconception that the Levy automatically translates to immediate access to $175 million. The reality is that levy funds are collected gradually over six years.  The $175 million capital levy will be collected twice a year over the next six years. Approximately 53 percent of funds are collected in April and approximately 47 percent in October. This means that our financial resources are not immediately available, and project timelines for repairs must be carefully planned and executed to align with the pace of funding.

The district focuses on projects essential for keeping our schools safe. But if materials or services aren't available or unexpected events occur, we may need to change priorities. For example, when a problem like a broken water pipe arises, like what happened at Woodland Elementary last winter, we'll adjust our plans accordingly.

The funding approved through the 2024 levy election represents a shared commitment from our community to enhance our educational infrastructure and provide better opportunities for our students. While we all desire to see projects completed promptly, we must approach our work patiently and diligently considering the funding timeline. Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to our schools and children's future.
