... because you asked, what is Energy Intensity?
Energy Intensity (EUI) is a measure of how much energy a building uses in a year, divided by its total floor area. It is usually measured in energy units like kBtu (Kilo British Thermal Units) or GJ (gigajoules) per square foot per year.
Why Measure Energy Intensity?
By measuring EUI, the Puyallup School District can see how much energy our buildings consume and find ways to use energy more efficiently. Improving energy efficiency means using less energy to do the same tasks. Efficient energy use saves money and helps reduce the need for new energy, which is crucial for achieving net-zero emissions.
The Bigger Picture
Producing goods and services requires a certain amount of energy. High energy intensity means we use a lot of energy for production. Reducing energy intensity can lower emissions throughout the lifecycle of products, including during production and transportation. Reduced energy intensity is essential for sustainable development and a circular economy, where resources are reused and recycled.
Lowering energy intensity has several benefits:
-
It reduces emissions, helping to combat climate change.
-
It makes energy more accessible to people who currently lack it.
-
It supports sustainable growth in emerging economies, sustainably meeting the increasing demand for modern energy.
-
It helps PSD (Puyallup School District) comply with state law and reduce energy costs, allowing us to reinvest savings back into our schools.
Energy Efficiency in Puyallup School District
The Puyallup School District (PSD) is actively working to improve energy efficiency through its powerED Program. This Program focuses on maximizing efficiency and reducing utility costs for energy and water through low and no-cost opportunities.
Recent Achievements
-
HVAC Schedules: PSD has significantly progressed by updating 236 individual schedules, changing HVAC schedules, improving efficiency, and extending equipment life.
-
Energy Scans and Site Walks: In March, PSD worked with HVAC Technicians and a Tacoma Public Utility Energy Engineer to conduct an energy scan at Rogers High School, which helped identify new savings opportunities.
-
Savings Goals: Four months into the Strategic Energy Management (SEM) program with Tacoma Public Utilities, PSD is already at 90% of its first-year annual savings goal.
