In the Puyallup School District, an important conversation is taking place about the potential merger of our elementary Spanish dual language education programs from two schools into a single magnet school location. The goal of this proposal is to establish a Spanish dual language magnet school that serves as a specialized educational hub, attracting students from diverse backgrounds and fostering unique linguistic and academic opportunities for bilingualism and cross-cultural understanding.
Currently, dual-language education is offered at two locations; Dessie Evans and Karshner Elementary schools. These programs operate under a two-way dual language model, ideally with an equal balance of native Spanish and English speakers.
The proposal, presented to the School Capacity and Utilization Task Force on February 22, holds promise but it also raises important considerations, such as:
- Ensuring the preservation of cultural authenticity and maintaining strong community engagement.
- Carefully evaluating the transportation and logistics of transporting students to Karshner Elementary.
- Addressing the potential displacement of resident Karshner students and staff who chose not to participate in dual language education, which may result in their relocation to surrounding schools.
It is important to note that the proposed merger would not occur all at once. The process of transitioning Karshner Elementary into a full dual language magnet school would be phased in over six years, beginning in the fall of 2025. This gradual approach would allow for careful planning, ongoing community engagement, and a smoother transition for students, families, and staff.
If this proposal were to move forward, starting in the fall of 2025, Karshner Elementary general education kindergarten students would attend nearby neighborhood schools. Each year, one additional grade level of non-dual language students would be phased out of Karshner Elementary and served in nearby neighborhood schools. By the fall of 2031, Karshner would become a dedicated Spanish dual language school for all interested district students, completing the transition process.
As part of the proposed transition, the attendance boundary for Karshner Elementary would be dissolved. The surrounding elementary schools – Waller Road, Maplewood, and Stewart – would potentially absorb the existing Karshner attendance area, expanding their boundaries to accommodate students who would have otherwise attended Karshner.
Throughout this process, community engagement will be a central focus. We understand the importance of involving all stakeholders in decision-making and ensuring that the transition is as smooth as possible for everyone involved.
As the conversation about the future of dual language education in PSD continues, administration is assessing the potential impacts on student housing for Dessie Evans, Karshner, and nearby valley schools. It is essential to weigh the long-term benefits and challenges of our educational offerings and their effects on student housing. By prioritizing equity, inclusivity, academic excellence, and cultural preservation, we can work together to build a thriving and inclusive educational environment for all students.
