PSD Applies for Grant to Bring Solar Power to Northwood Elementary

Solar panels

The Puyallup School District has applied for a state grant to help fund a new solar panel system at Northwood Elementary School. The application was prepared in partnership with McKinstry, our PowerED partner, helping us to meet Clean Building Act requirements by identifying areas for energy savings. Last year, the district secured funding to study and design this system, which strengthens the likelihood of receiving full construction funding.

If awarded, the school would install a 227.74 kW solar array on its roof. This system, which would generate clean, renewable energy, lowers the amount of electricity the school needs to purchase. Northwood serves as a community identified by the state as overburdened and at higher risk for environmental impacts, making the solar project particularly beneficial. Investing solar energy at Northwood Elementary directly supports district priorities for equity, sustainability, and responsible stewardship of public funds.

When installed, when installed, the system will produce about 246,600 kilowatt hours of electricity each year. This could save the district about $47,994 annually in utility costs. Over 25 years, the savings could total approximately $1,199,839. These long-term savings help protect classroom resources and keep the focus on student learning.

In addition to benefiting Northwood Elementary, this project also strengthens the Edgewood community. Generating solar power on site can reduce strain on the local electrical grid, supporting energy reliability for nearby homes. The panels will seamlessly integrate with the school’s current building systems. Once operational, the system is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 165 metric tons each year and support cleaner air for students, staff, and neighbors.

Students will also benefit directly. Teachers will be able to incorporate solar energy systems into lessons about science, technology, and environmental responsibility. Students will see firsthand how energy is made and how choices today shape the future.

This work aligns with the district’s strategic plan goal 5: Facilities, Safety, and Security. Well-maintained, efficient buildings provide a safe and supportive environment for learning. Using modern, cost-effective energy solutions protects resources and ensures that school facilities remain strong for the long term.

The district will continue to share updates and welcomes questions from families and neighbors. The state is expected to announce grant awards by February 2026.
