Preparing for Progress at Puyallup High School: Library-Science Building Prepares for Demolition

This spring break, preparation work was in full swing at Puyallup High School as the district gets ready for the demolition of the aging Library-Science Building this summer. This week, Boush Moving Company was on site clearing out the building, salvaging usable items for other schools, and recycling outdated materials to minimize waste.

In addition to the building clean-out, crews removed nearby trees to ensure a safe demolition process, and Streamline Construction began digging a trench to protect and preserve existing utility lines. This work lays the groundwork for future construction, should the bond proposal move forward.

The Library-Science Building, originally constructed in 1962 and last modernized more than 35 years ago, housed the school’s library and science classrooms. After more than six decades of service, the building was closed due to significant system failures and rising repair costs. With estimated repairs in the multi-millions, the decision was made to prioritize taxpayer dollars toward more sustainable, long-term solutions.

Puyallup High School, a historic campus serving the community for over a century, is facing growing challenges tied to overcrowded and outdated facilities. The last major construction project was the Career and Technical Education (CTE) building in 2009. Portions of the main building still date back to 1927 and haven’t been modernized since 1995.
