New SmartSign Installed to Enhance Safety Near Ballou Junior High, Firgrove Elementary

Smart traffic sign near Rogers High School on 128th

In a collaborative effort to enhance traffic safety around Ballou Junior High and Firgrove Elementary, a new SmartSign has been installed. This sign is similar to the SmartSign serving Rogers High School and Zieger Elementary on 128th Street near the crosswalk on 90th Ave E. This safety initiative made possible through a partnership with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and a grant they received, aims to address concerning driver behavior identified in a recent survey.

The SmartSign is an innovative tool that encourages focused driving, reduces speeds, promotes seat belt use, and enhances overall traffic safety in school zones. It serves as a reminder to drivers to exercise caution and be mindful of their surroundings, particularly when navigating areas populated by students and families.

This installation comes in response to a troubling report from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, which surveyed driver speeds in school zones in the fall of 2022.  The data, collected from 130 school zones across Washington State, revealed a high percentage of drivers exceeding speed limits, including those near Ballou Junior High.

Key findings from the survey include:

•    Near the Firgrove Elementary and Ballou Junior High shared campus, more than 99% of drivers exceeded the speed limit, and nearly three out of four did not adjust their speeds during active school zone periods.

These findings underscore the urgent need for improved safety measures. The sign, installed near Ballou and Firgrove, reminds drivers to exercise caution and be mindful of their surroundings, particularly in areas populated by students and families.

In addition to the SmartSign installation, Pierce County, as part of the Safe Routes to School Initiative, is planning improvements to 136th Street East from 97th Avenue East to SR-161 (Meridian Ave E) to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility. These improvements include:

  1. Installing a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) system and pedestrian-scale crossing illumination at the existing marked crosswalk.
  2. Evaluating and retrofitting the existing curb ramps for ADA compliance.
  3. Adding flashing beacons to the two 20 MPH school zone signs

These initiatives urge drivers to prioritize traffic safety around school zones and support them. The district remains committed to creating a safer environment through continued collaboration with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and the community.

How Your Driving Can Improve Safety in School Zones

  • Observe Speed Limits: Set a good example by always adhering to the posted speed limits in school zones. Speed limits are typically reduced during school hours to ensure the safety of students. Slowing down gives you more time to react to sudden movements like children crossing the street.
  • Eliminate Distractions: Avoid using your phone, eating, or engaging in any activity that takes your attention away from driving. Focusing on driving in school zones where unexpected pedestrian activity is expected is crucial. Keeping your eyes on the road and being aware of your surroundings can prevent accidents.
  • Yield to Pedestrians and Follow Crossing Guards: Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and obey the instructions of crossing guards. Children may not always be aware of traffic rules, so drivers must be extra cautious and courteous. Giving pedestrians the right of way can significantly enhance safety in school zones.
