Meeker Elementary Gets Critical Repairs Thanks to 2024 Capital Levy

Exterior painting and roof repairs at Meeker Elementary School

This summer, crews are hard at work at Meeker Elementary replacing the roof and gutters, repairing damaged lap siding, and giving the building's exterior a fresh coat of paint, all made possible by the 2024 voter-approved Capital Levy.

The building’s existing roof had reached the end of its service life, with wear and tear showing leaks and damaged siding. This work isn’t just an upgrade; it’s necessary maintenance to maintain our public investment. Without it, moisture intrusion and long-term structural issues could threaten both the building and the learning environment inside.

Meeker was last modernized in 2006, when voters supported an expansion that added multipurpose space and converted existing areas into classrooms. Nearly two decades later, that investment, like any aging asset, requires routine upkeep to remain safe and functional.

This summer’s repair work addresses identified deficiencies and is part of the district’s broader capital plan to extend the life of school facilities before problems grow in scale or cost. Replacing the roof now helps preserve the learning spaces below and ensures the district continues to make the most of past capital investments.

“Addressing items on the observed deficiencies list isn’t optional, it’s a responsibility. These are the issues we know about and tackling them head-on helps us avoid more expensive problems down the road,” said Brady Martin, Executive Director of Construction, Maintenance and Facilities Planning. “These investments are about stewardship of our public buildings. The community has invested in our schools, and we are committed to maintaining that investment through proactive, planned work—paying for what we can, when funding is available.”

This project is a clear example of why local levy funding matters. It allows the district to maintain the schools our community built, avoiding costly emergency repairs and keeping students learning in safe, dry, and well-maintained spaces.

Thank you to the voters who supported the 2024 Capital Levy. Your vote protects schools like Meeker and keeps our facilities ready to serve the next generation of learners. For a full list of 2024 Capital Levy projects, visit www.puyallupsd.org/levy
