SCUT meeting January

School Capacity and Utilization Task Force Reviews Updated Enrollment Projections

The School Capacity and Utilization Task Force met January 27, 2026, to review updated enrollment projections, housing and development trends, and how these factors impact school capacity and near-term facility planning.

While regionally we are seeing declining birth rates and a slower housing market, PSD enrollment stability is supported by an increase in nonresident waivers, more than 3,000 planned housing units, and strong cohort movement through elementary grades. These factors are among the reasons that junior high enrollment is expected to increase in the next few years.

The Task Force also reviewed projection accuracy, program changes affecting capacity, school specific data for Glacier View Junior High, Woodland Elementary, and Dessie Evans Elementary, updates on the Uplands development, and progress on board approved recommendations from the past two years.

PowerED Program: Advancing Energy Compliance and Facility Upgrades

Puyallup School District is making steady progress toward compliance with Washington State’s Clean Buildings Act through its PowerED energy management program. This work focuses on improving building performance, reducing energy use, and preparing school facilities to meet state-required energy standards.

Facility improvements included in the 2024 Capital Levy were previously identified through the district’s long-term building renewal assessments and deferred maintenance program. Voter approval of the levy provided the funding needed to implement these planned projects. As a result, the district has been able to submit multiple school buildings for early evaluation under the Clean Buildings Act, extending the compliance timeline to July 2032 and positioning the district ahead of state deadlines.

Baseball Fields at Emerald Ridge

Fielding a Better Season at Emerald Ridge High School

Just in time for spring baseball and community youth leagues, improvements to the Emerald Ridge High School baseball field are complete. Funded by the 2024 Capital Levy, the project upgraded infield sod and drainage between the dugouts and along the base lines, helping reduce standing water and muddy conditions. These improvements create a safer, more reliable playing surface and support greater year-round use for students and the community.
