Celebrating Our Summer 2025 Capital Projects Interns

Daniel Grilley and Spencer Hainey

Help us recognize the incredible contributions of our summer interns. This year, our Capital Projects team was fortunate to work alongside two remarkable high school student interns whose hard work, curiosity, and dedication made a real impact on our projects and our community.

Daniel and Spencer have been assisting our GIS/CAD team by digitizing architectural drawings and helping measure and inventory school spaces to ensure our current building plans are accurate. This is a significant undertaking, and their support has been invaluable.

This week, they took on a very specific task, visiting school kitchens to identify and measure sinks. This work will support the district’s water quality efforts in collaboration with the Department of Health, ensuring the district can quickly locate the correct fixtures if additional testing or repairs are needed.

Daniel Grilley
Daniel, now a recent graduate of Emerald Ridge High School, returned for his third summer internship with Capital Projects. His dedication and willingness to learn have been evident in every task he’s taken on. “This internship has helped me understand how school buildings work and why physical space is important for learning,” Daniel said. “As I think about becoming a teacher and coach, I now see how much the environment can affect learning and student success.” Daniel’s thoughtful perspective and steady work ethic have been a true asset to our team.

Spencer Hainey
Spencer, entering his senior year at Rogers High School and a member of the Puyallup High School robotics team, joined us for his first summer internship. His technical skills, problem-solving mindset, and enthusiasm for hands-on work have brought fresh energy to the team. Whether supporting site visits, reviewing drawings, or learning about the trades that bring school facilities to life, Spencer has embraced every opportunity to grow.

Internships in the trades and capital construction fields provide more than just professional experience, they offer a front-row seat to the complex collaboration required to design, build, and maintain spaces that support K-12 education. We are proud to have provided these opportunities and even more proud of how Daniel and Spencer embraced them.

The contributions of these students will be felt long after summer ends. Their work has helped lay the groundwork for future projects that will benefit students and staff for years to come.
