Boundary Review Committee Begins Work on Ferrucci and Glacier View Attendance Areas

The Puyallup School District’s Boundary Review Committee held its first meeting Sept. 15 at Glacier View Junior High, beginning a community-led process at evaluating the attendance boundary between Ferrucci Junior High and Glacier View Junior High.

The committee was established following a recommendation from the School Capacity and Utilization Task Force, which presented its findings to the Board of Directors last spring in May 2026. The committee’s work focuses on long-term enrollment trends and school capacity planning and is separate from the ongoing Ferrucci Junior High fire restoration and temporary student relocation efforts.

The Boundary Review Committee serves in an advisory capacity to the superintendent and School Board of Directors. Its primary responsibility is to develop a community-based recommendation regarding potential attendance boundary adjustments between Ferrucci and Glacier View junior high schools.

During the first meeting, committee members reviewed the scope of work, meeting schedule, and guiding principles for the process. The committee will follow Board Policy 3130 as a framework for evaluating potential boundary adjustments, with consideration given to equity, transportation efficiency, enrollment balance, and access to educational programs.

The committee includes residents from the Ferrucci and Glacier View attendance areas, at-large community members, representatives from the School Capacity and Utilization Task Force, district administrators, school leadership, transportation staff and junior high student representatives.

Community members will participate in five formal meetings this fall. Community input gathered throughout the process will help inform the committee's work and form recommendations to the School Board for consideration.

Why the Review is Taking Place

As enrollment patterns and residential growth change over time, our schools can experience different levels of enrollment and building utilization. Periodic boundary reviews help the district plan for future growth and maintain equitable access to educational opportunities and learning resources.

Ferrucci and Glacier View Boundary Areas

In Region 1, the Emerald Ridge High School catchment area, residential development continues to be a factor in increasing student enrollment. The Sunrise Master Planned Community, located on South Hill, is expected to add approximately 700 additional housing units within the Puyallup School District boundary, with the potential for this number to increase under a minor amendment proposal submitted to Pierce County. The district is also watching closely as nearby housing slated within the Orting School District could impact PSD schools due to their proximity to the new housing.

The committee will review current and projected enrollment data, transportation route opportunities, and other district programs and initiatives that may affect school capacity. Areas of focus include.

  • Balancing enrollment between Ferrucci and Glacier View Junior High Schools.
  • Supporting equitable access to programs and educational opportunities
  • Reviewing current and future enrollment trends
  • Identifying opportunities to improve transportational efficiencies
  • Considering other district programs and initiatives that may affect school capacity.
Dr. Brobbey addressing the Boundary Review Committee

During the meeting, district staff emphasized the proposed boundary realignment is not related to the recent fire at Ferrucci Junior High School or the temporary relocation of students. Instead, the recommendation stems from long-term enrollment trends and facility capacity planning identified by the School Capacity and Utilization Task Force and presented to the Board of Directors. The committee's work is focused solely on evaluating the attendance boundary between Ferrucci and Glacier View junior high schools. District staff noted that the committee is not considering adjustments to district boundaries with neighboring school districts, such as the Orting School District, as those changes require a separate process involving the Puget Sound Educational Service District and affected school districts.

Next Steps

The committee will continue meeting throughout the fall and provide opportunities for community feedback. At the conclusion of its work, the committee will present its recommendations to the School Board, along with the options considered and , potential benefits and challenges of each.

The committee’s recommendations are expected to be presented during a Board of Directors’ Study Session on December 7, with board action anticipated on December 14.
